With the return of some pleasantly warm weather, It’s time to start building those soundtracks to take you through the long summer evenings. I’d suggest starting with Bristol-based, lo-fi inspired artist and producer Slowe. From a young age, Slowe has been writing and performing in bands. During a break in her gigging routine, Slowe found herself experimenting with music production. Utilising a range of physical instruments and session recordings, Slowe uses innovative production techniques inspired by artists such as J Dilla and Madlib to create carefully crafted tracks that appear to flow effortlessly and bend genres. Slowe attributes the artists and genres that have inspired her production to her love of crate digging; nods and references towards artists such as Tyler the Creator, Tame Impala and Erykah Badu can be heard within her music.

Slowe’s debut album with Brighton label Tru Thoughts is called Where The Mind Wanders. This album is a blend of multiple genres, yet fits firmly within the increasingly popular lo-fi beat-making genre. If like me you have been partial to enjoying a bit of lo-fi hip-hop in the past then you will know that this scene has given rise to many a thoughtless creation hidden behind the guise of music for study, Slowe is a breath of fresh air in this soundscape. Her production quality shines brightly throughout her music, with each note and beat placed exactly where needed. The combination of soul jazz and hip-hop is blended seamlessly as are the physical and electronic production techniques. If you are looking for a smooth and satisfying album to enjoy today then Slowe is a no-brainer.
